How We Rate Gold and Silver IRA Companies

What we assess, how we weigh it, and what does not influence a rating.

Most comparison sites in this industry publish rankings without explaining where they come from. We think a reader deserves to know what a rating means before relying on it, and which parts of a page are paid placements. This page sets both out.

Two separate things on every page

Our commercial pages contain two distinct elements, and it matters that you can tell them apart.

Featured Partner. A clearly labelled box at the top of the page. This position is a paid partnership — the company compensates us for it. We label it as such on every page where it appears, and it sits outside the editorial ranking.

Editorial ranking. The numbered list below it, ordered by our own rating. Compensation does not determine a company's position in this list. A company that pays us more does not move up it, and a company that pays us nothing is not moved down.

We do earn commissions from most of the companies we review. That is how the site is funded, and we disclose it at the top of every page that contains affiliate links. What we do not do is let the size of a commission decide a rating.

The seven criteria

1. Fee transparency

Whether a company publishes its custodian and depository fee schedule openly, provides it on request in writing, or leaves it vague until you are on the phone. Published figures score highest. This is the criterion we weigh most heavily, because opaque pricing is where most of the harm in this industry occurs.

2. Minimum purchase

The smallest amount a company will open an account for. We treat this as an accessibility factor rather than a quality measure — a $50,000 minimum is not a defect, it simply narrows who the company serves. It affects which readers a company suits, not how well it operates.

3. Metals offered

Whether a company handles gold and silver only, or all four IRS-approved metals including platinum and palladium. Broader coverage scores higher, though most account holders never use it.

4. Storage options

Number and quality of depositories available, whether segregated storage is offered, and the insurance behind it. A single depository scores lower than a network, and segregated storage scores above commingled.

5. BBB rating

The Better Business Bureau grade, taken as an external check we do not control. We report it as published rather than adjusting it.

6. Buyback terms

Whether the company will repurchase metal, on what terms, and how clearly those terms are stated. A written guarantee scores above an informal commitment, and an unstated policy scores lowest.

7. Years in business

Length of operating history. A long record is not proof of quality, but in a sector where firms appear and disappear it carries weight — particularly for an account you may hold for twenty years.

How the criteria combine

We do not run these through a fixed formula and publish whatever number falls out. A rating is an editorial judgment across the seven criteria, weighted so that fee transparency, storage, buyback terms and operating history carry the most influence, and minimum purchase the least.

This means two companies can arrive at the same rating by different routes — one through a long record and a broad depository network, another through published pricing and a written buyback guarantee. Where that happens we say so in the assessment below.

Current ratings and why

Company Rating Strongest on Weakest on
Augusta Precious Metals 4.9 Publishes a full fee schedule; broad depository network; A+ BBB Highest minimum purchase of the group at $50,000
Goldco 4.7 Nearly twenty years operating; highest-price buyback guarantee in writing; A+ BBB Fee schedule provided on request rather than published
Birch Gold Group 4.7 Longest operating history; flat published fee; all four metals; four depositories No written buyback guarantee beyond an informal commitment
American Hartford Gold 4.6 Lifetime buyback commitment; low fees and low minimum; A+ BBB Shorter operating history; gold and silver only
Advantage Gold 4.5 Lowest minimum purchase; all four metals; A+ BBB Wide fee range depending on account; shorter record
GoldenCrest Metals 4.3 Fee schedule confirmed in writing on request; segregated storage available Newest company in the group; A- BBB; single depository; highest annual cost
Noble Gold 4.2 Segregated storage with Lloyd's insurance; all four metals; A+ BBB Fee figures not published and not consistently reported by third parties

Where a company's fee schedule is not published, we say so rather than estimating a figure. Our fee calculator excludes those companies from cost comparisons for the same reason — a number we cannot verify is worse than no number.

What does not affect a rating

Commission rates. The companies we review pay different amounts. That difference does not appear in the ratings.

Requests from the companies themselves. We receive them. We have declined requests to raise a rating, and we will continue to decline them. A company that disagrees with its rating is welcome to send us data; data can change a rating, a request cannot.

Featured Partner status. Paying for the featured position buys placement in a labelled box. It does not buy a higher rating, and the featured company appears in the editorial ranking at whatever position its rating earns.

How we source the data

Fee figures come from a company's own published schedule where one exists, or from written confirmation by the company where it does not. Where neither is available and third-party sources disagree — which happens more often than it should in this industry — we mark the figure as unavailable rather than pick one.

Storage, minimum purchase, metals offered and buyback terms are taken from company documentation and verified against their published material. BBB grades are reported as published.

Fees and terms change without notice. We update figures when a company changes its schedule, and we recommend confirming current terms directly with any provider before opening an account.

When we get something wrong

We do. If you find a figure on this site that is out of date or incorrect, tell us and we will check it and correct it. Accuracy is the only thing that makes a comparison site worth reading.
